What a cookie actually is
A cookie is a small text file that a website asks your browser to keep. Most of them do dull and useful jobs, like remembering that you are logged in, or that you have already closed a message.
This page lists every cookie this site uses and says what each one is for. It is short, because there is not much to list.
The cookies we use
Making the site work. WordPress, which this site is built on, sets a cookie when somebody logs in to edit it. If you are here to read rather than to edit, you will never be given one.
Our page builder and our caching plugin set cookies that help pages load quickly and make sure you are shown the right version of a page. Neither one holds anything personal about you.
Understanding how the site is used. Google Analytics sets cookies that count visits and tell us which pages get read, and for how long. They give us numbers rather than names, and we use them to work out what to write more of.
What we do not use
There is no advertising network on this site, so there are no advertising cookies. The partner adverts you see are images we host ourselves and place ourselves, and nothing about them follows you to another website.
We do not use social media tracking pixels, and we do not hand anything about your visit to a third party for their own marketing.
One thing that is not a cookie. If you use the Compare button to put two or three employers side by side, your picks are kept in your browser’s session storage until you close the tab, so they survive moving between pages. Nothing about them is sent to us, and it only exists because you pressed the button. That is the only thing this site stores on your device beyond the cookies above.
Turning them off
Every browser lets you block or delete cookies, usually somewhere under Settings and then Privacy. Blocking all of them will not break this site, because nothing here needs a cookie in order to be readable.
If you would rather Google Analytics did not measure your visit anywhere on the web, Google publishes a browser add-on that switches it off: tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout.
Changes to this page
When we start using a cookie or stop using one, we change this page and update the date at the top of it.
