About Land Studio

Founded in 2016 by landscape architect Simon Richards, Land Studio was established with a vision to create places that connect people with nature.

Based in Chester, we are a small, independent boutique consultancy built around collaboration, creativity and a shared commitment to delivering thoughtful, environmentally responsible projects.

From the beginning, our approach has been about looking at the bigger picture, bringing different perspectives together and finding solutions that work for both people and the natural environment.

Being a smaller business is an important part of who we are. We value personal relationships, both with our clients and within our team, and believe everyone should have the opportunity to contribute beyond their immediate role.

Our culture is built on trust, flexibility and individual responsibility. We encourage people to use their initiative, take ownership of their work, challenge established thinking and bring forward ideas that help us improve.

We believe good people do their best work when they’re given the freedom to manage their responsibilities, supported by colleagues who share their commitment to quality.

As we look to the future, our focus is on maintaining the independent, collaborative culture that defines Land Studio while continuing to develop our expertise and deliver work we’re proud of.

Connecting people with nature through integrated landscape, drainage and ecology design.

Currently interested inUpdated October 2026

We’re particularly interested in hearing from commercially minded Senior and Principal Ecologists, as well as experienced Ecologists who are ready to take the next step in their careers.

We’re looking for people who enjoy working across varied and technically interesting projects, take ownership of their work and are confident managing client relationships and responsibilities.

You’ll thrive here if you’re proactive, independent and enjoy contributing ideas rather than being restricted to a narrowly defined role.

Whether you’re looking for greater autonomy, more flexibility or the opportunity to help shape the future of a small, independent multidisciplinary consultancy, we’d welcome a conversation.

Read more about what we do

Land Studio is a multidisciplinary consultancy specialising in landscape architecture, surface water management and ecology, delivering integrated, nature-led solutions across the UK.

Our work covers residential developments, commercial schemes, leisure destinations and complex multidisciplinary projects, with a particular focus on incorporating biodiversity and sustainable design into the development process.

Ecology

Our ecological consultancy services include Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (PEAs), Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIA), Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) assessments and strategies, Habitat Regulations Assessments (HRA), protected species surveys, mitigation and licensing, and Habitat Management and Monitoring Plans (HMMPs).

We support clients through planning, design and delivery, providing technically robust, practical and commercially informed ecological advice.

Landscape Architecture

Our landscape architects create places that enhance biodiversity, improve the experience of people using them and respond sensitively to their surroundings. This includes landscape design, masterplanning and nature-led solutions across urban and rural environments.

Surface Water Management

Our surface water specialists develop integrated drainage and sustainable drainage systems (SuDS), designing solutions that manage water effectively while creating opportunities for habitat enhancement and improved landscape quality.

Landscape Construction

Through our sister company, Land Form, we also support landscape construction and the practical delivery of nature-led projects.

Our Integrated Approach

What distinguishes Land Studio is how these disciplines work together. Ecology is considered from the earliest stages of design, alongside landscape and drainage, rather than being introduced as a separate requirement later in the process.

This collaborative approach helps us deliver joined-up solutions that balance development requirements, environmental responsibilities and commercial considerations, while creating opportunities for meaningful biodiversity improvements.

Life at Land Studio

Why people join, and why they stay

At Land Studio, you won’t be just another ecologist in a large team. As a small, independent boutique consultancy, we offer the opportunity to take real ownership of your work, build meaningful client relationships and have a genuine influence on the projects and business you’re part of.

We believe in trusting people to do their jobs. Our culture is built around flexibility, autonomy and personal responsibility, with hybrid working and an emphasis on getting the work done rather than simply watching the clock.

You’ll have the opportunity to work on varied, interesting and technically challenging projects, collaborating directly with landscape architects and surface water specialists. This means broader exposure to the development process, including Biodiversity Net Gain, ecological planning, project management and commercial decision-making.

We encourage people to bring their own ideas, challenge existing processes and contribute to how the business develops. There’s no unnecessary micromanagement or rigid hierarchy preventing you from making a difference.

For experienced ecologists, this means greater freedom, responsibility and involvement in the wider business. For ambitious ecologists looking to progress, it offers the opportunity to broaden their experience and develop commercially as well as technically.

Above all, we’re looking for people who want to be part of a collaborative team, enjoy taking initiative and take pride in delivering great work.

October 2026Bringing Ecology, Landscape and Water Management Together on Major Development Projects

Land Studio continues to support a range of interesting and complex development projects, including major residential schemes where ecology, landscape architecture and surface water management work together from the earliest planning stages. Our integrated approach allows us to develop nature-led solutions that balance development requirements with biodiversity enhancement, sustainable drainage and long-term environmental management. With Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) playing an increasingly important role in development, our ecology team contributes to shaping projects from initial assessment through to planning, design and delivery.
